American Eagle commenced service on November 1 of 1984. In 1993, they were acquired by AMR Corp., the parent corporation of American Airlines. From that point on, American Eagle became an American brand name for the regional branch of American Airlines.

American Eagle's largest hub is Charlotte Douglas International, which operates over 340 flights per day, making it the largest express flight operation in the world.

As of April 2020, American Eagle operates 602 aircraft, 118 of this aircraft are ERJ 145.
